Fay Ann: I ready fuh dem all!
07 February 2010 10:07 am
Declaring she will be 'taking back both my damn titles' at the International Power and Groovy Soca Monarch competition on Carnival Friday, Fay-Ann Lyons sent the message to her opponents that she was ready to take them all on.
Lyons made her bold statement on Friday during her performance at the Ladies Night Out show, Jean Pierre Complex, Wrightson Road, Port of Spain. With the sold out audience obeying her every command waving and moving left to right as she sang 'True Lies', Lyons continuously boasted that she could not be beat in the soca monarch or road march race, a title which she is also defending.
Ladies Night Out producers, Randy Glasgow Productions had advertised that Lyons would have been delivering her first 'concert performance' at the show, but what was presented was the regular fete set presented by the Asylum Band throughout the Carnival season. Lyons fronts the band alongside her husband, Bunji Garlin. Nonetheless the audience lapped up every minute of the performance.
Bunji too had the crowd at his beck and call as he performed a mix of past hits along with some of his material for this year. They also mixed in a few retro soca hits such as 'The Party Hot', 'Feeling It', 'Ah Want It', 'Thunder', 'Caribbean Connection' and 'Soca Baptist', which got the people singing along.
The patrons really went wild when Bunji did a bit of very fast chanting, a style that is known as triple-tongue. Bunji, however, took things up a few notches chanting at lightning speed, which was on the night referred to as quad-tongue. And interestingly one could have understood every word chanted by the four-time soca monarch.
Several artistes joined Lyons and Bunji on stage during their set, some of them maintaining the energy built up by the Asylum. Tallpree from Grenada had people jumping as he performed 'Wicked Jam' and they got even wilder when he did the song that several years ago made him a regional soca star, 'Old Woman Alone'. Also creating a stir was Problem Child from St Vincent with his 'Party Hard' and 'Party Animal'.
Iwer George surprised some patrons, while others laughed saying, 'yeah right', in disbelief when he announced this was his last year performing. Just before making his exit after performing 'Party Hard', 'Fete After Fete' and 'We Like It' alongside Super Jigga TC. George told the audience he was, 'Going back to school. I want to get my Masters and be the Prime Minister.'
Tommy Joseph had some patrons doubled over with laughter as he went through his routine as BeOnSay, dressed in a skimpy outfit and sporting a flowing hair weave. Other comic moments in the show hosted by Nikki Crosby, Errol Fabien and Rachel Price included an impersonation of UNC Political Leader, Kamla Persad- Bissessar by Kenneth Supersad and Knots Landing's performance as Minister of Finance, Karen Nunez-Tesheira.
Also performing was TC from Barbados who was well received when she sang old hits, 'Ah Ready' and 'Kim', but faced a stoic audience as she performed 'Hot Sun And Rhythm' the song that won her the Sweet Soca and Party Monarch titles at the Barbados Crop Over last year.
Shyann Bailey had a tough time on stage as the band, Vince and the Soca Unit seemed to have difficulty with the music for 'Pure Sweetness' and 'Sweetness' and most people just stood still as Trini Jacobs performed 'Wine Back'.
Other artistes in the line-up included Denyse Plummer, Blackie, Sanell Dempster and the Vikash Dancers. Rikki Jai closed the show singing his very popular, 'Barman' ending his performance at about 1.20 a.m.
