Bigger BMA for 2011
04 February 2010 04:34 pm
THREE GRAMMY winners are set to perform in Barbados in January 2011 for the first ever Caribfest.
Producer of the event Ronnie Morris, said the newest festival was in train for the past two years, and will be held the day after the Barbados Music Awards (BMAs).
The BMAs are booked for the gymnasium of the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex on January 8 and the inaugural Caribfest the following night.
"We're really excited about it. We believe that Caribfest is going to be a significant pull for Barbados in January for the tourism industry, very significant. And we are going to work in tandem with the Barbados Jazz Festival, our intention is not to compete with them.
"I believe that bringing the BMAs closer to the Jazz Festival in 2010 contributed to a growth in attendance for both events, particularly for visitors into Barbados," he stated.
As the name suggests, Caribfest will be celebrating the excellence of artistes throughout the region and Latin America. Morris said they were already working with agencies in the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States, Cuba, South America, Jamaica and Trinidad.
"Our aim is to continue to reward Barbadian artistes, while promoting the strong talent pool that exists in the Caribbean region. But having Caribfest will enable us to benefit from a much wider market, in terms of sponsorship," he explained.
Morris said the back-to-back events were made possible through confirmation of a six-figure investment by American investors Brian Springle and Johnny Taylor Jr.
