Alison Hinds... Blessed

Gone are the days when bootylicious Bajan artiste Alison Hinds was afraid of facing a Trini crowd.

Hinds, whose first major hit was 'Ragamuffin,' came to T&T with fear and trembling as she was told she could be pelted if Trinis did not like her song. Now she is always excited to grace the stage with her songs and wining skills, resting assured that she will be fondly received by her peers and her supporters.

'The first time I came to Trinidad I was scared to death because I heard if Trini people don't like you, they would pelt you with toilet paper and cups,' she said. That was more than ten years ago when, she said, the crowd stood quietly looking at her in 1997.
Hinds is now planning to release the album Caribbean Queen during this Carnival season.

Recounting the first time she visited these shores, she said, 'We did a set and that was the longest 45 minutes of my life. I just kept thinking I don't want to see any cups flying on this stage.' After that performance she was encouraged by 'Big Mike' Antoine who said the crowd wanted to see if she had the potential. Years later, she's releasing this album in the heat of the Carnival season and it will feature a remix of Jah's Cure's Call On Me. She said Lock It On, this year's release, will also be on that album.

I'm blessed
A longstanding member of the soca industry, Hinds is well-known for songs such as Faluma and Roll. The Bajan singer considers Roll her greatest hit, as it reached a mainstream audience. Loved by T&T and Barbados, Hinds said, 'I feel blessed to have been able to be in this business for so long and people still want to see me perform.' Mother of five-year-old Saharan, Hinds said, she faces some of the same challenges most working mothers face. However, she said, 'The difference is my job takes me out of the country and I’m not working nine to five.'

But Hinds ensures she speaks with her daughter every day when she is away, and was thankful to have relatives such as her husband and her parents, ensuring she is loved and in a stable environment. Asked what she felt was her greatest asset, Hinds opted for a 'who' instead, saying, 'My daughter is my heart and joy and my husband...but my daughter gets first billing.' Still having time to be tech-savvy, Hinds said her fans can keep up with her on twitter.com, where she is always 'tweeting.' That site also takes fans to her Facebook page.
