Kiddies have their day
26 July 2009 08:16 am
In a vivid splash of colour, the little ones took to the stage at the National Stadium yesterday, to take part in the Kraft/Farmers Choice Junior Kadooment.
The event got underway around 9:30 in the morning, as in a new initiative, the Kings and Queens of the bands, resplendent in their creatively constructed costumes, were allowed to parade in front of the judges first.
As they cleared the platform, it was time for the remainder of the bands to play 'mas' and have their fun.
Around 4 000 tiny masqueraders in 17 different bands, then excitedly crossed the stage in a sea of red, blue, green, yellow, purple, orange, black, white, silver and gold.
From fairies to sailors, to cricketers to cane cutters, the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves as they danced to this year's popular tunes.
Seeking to add more wins to their ever-increasing list, veteran band leaders Gwyneth Squires and Betty West were well-received by the audience, which grew steadily throughout the morning.
Squires' Fanfare, awash with bright hues, urged children to embrace their imaginations and enjoy life and music.
Meanwhile, West's 'For a Better Barbados' carried the more serious message of protecting the environment from pollution, and the need for the human race to practice safe sex to avoid contracting the damaging and deadly HIV/AIDS virus.
In addition, Reggie Cave's 'Legacy of King Ja-Ja' was impressive as it took persons through the historical drama that led to this individual coming to Barbados in the 1800s and Renee Ratcliffe's 'Neverlands', which transported persons to a magical world of make-believe was brought to life onstage.
There was a strong representation from the primary schools this year, including Luther Thorne Memorial Primary, Wesley Hall Infants, St. Giles Primary, Belmont Primary, St. Stephen's Primary, Roland Edwards Primary, Welches Primary, Boscobel Primary and St. Gabriel's.
The bands were judged on craftsmanship, originality, portrayal, presentation, and visual impact for their Individual, Couples, and Band sections.
