Destra, Faye-Ann in tight race for Road March
25 February 2009 06:56 am
Bacchanal reigned on the streets of Port-of-Spain yesterday as masqueraders wined, waved and had a ball, as Destra Garcia's popular soca hit, Bacchanal, blared from the majority of music trucks.
But in San Fernando, International Power Soca champion Faye-Ann Lyons-Alvarez seemed set to capture the 2009 Road March title with her song Meet SuperBlue which played repeatedly yesterday as bands crossed the three main judging points.
Although Faye-Ann Lyons-Alvarez dominated Monday's mas, Bacchanal stole the spotlight in Port-of-Spain, yesterday. At the International Soca Monarch and Groovy Monarch competitions last Friday, Destra said she intended to capture the Road March title this year, and from the looks of things, this could very well be a possibility.
However, despite her accomplishments, Lyons-Alvarez song continued to receive dominant airplay throughout south Trinidad yesterday as hundreds of masqueraders flooded the streets. Before midday, as the bands crossed the first judging point at Independence Avenue, San Fernando, Lyons-Alvarez song was a hit. Masqueraders jumped to the beat of the tune which lit up radio airwaves since it was released. It was also played repeatedly at the other judging pointsCoffee Street and at Skinner Park where the bands gathered for their final judging after 3 pm.
In the North, despite thick clouds overhead and sporadic drizzles, revellers in full costume went wild every time the song played.
From South Quay all the way to the Queen's Park Savannah, it was a popular tune with DJ's and masqueraders. 'Faye-Ann won everything at Soca Monarch, I think Destra deserves the top spot in Road March,' said an exuberant Yvette De Norbriega. Those in her band, Trini Revellers, echoed her sentiments.
'It's a wild song and I think it reflects the true essence of Monday and Tuesday and that is plenty, plenty bacchanal,' shouted another reveller. Garcia has not won a Road March title in a few years. Last year, Lyons-Alvarez won the competition with Get On. She took home a car worth $135,000 and $25,000. If she captures the Road March title again this year, it would make her the first female artiste to win three prestigious titles in one year. She already won the Power Soca Monarch and Groovy Monarch titles on Fantastic Friday night, winning a hefty purse of $1.2 million. Following close behind Lyons-Alvarez Meet Superblue was Blaxx, with Tusty. Shurwayne Winchester, who is usually a popular contender for Road March, lagged behind this year and so too did Machel Montano.
Incident free
Up to 3.30 pm, bands were still crossing the Queen's Park Savannah judging point. By that time large bands like Tribe, Brian McFarlane and Legacy had already made their way across and were heading down St Vincent Street. There were no reports of violence involving revellers and this could have been attributed to a heavy police presence along the entire parade route.
