The Barbados Music Awards returns for a sixth outing. The prestigious event is preparing to dazzle its fans and the global music industry alike with what is expected to be an event unlike anything previously witnessed in Barbados. Produced with sincerity in its intentions, integrity in its selection, love for the country and a passion for the development of the global music industry. Be there!
Founder and Director of the annual Barbados Music Awards,
Ronnie Morris, has announced that permission has been granted by family members
of the late Mike Wilkinson and Jermaine Forrester to stage tributes to the late
entertainers at the event set for January 8th 2011.
“We are already putting the tributes together having
received the go-ahead from Richard Stoute and Philip Forrester” Morris, who at
the time of this press release was in Jamaica conducting meetings for the
upcoming Caribfest event said.
Morris stated his intention to meet or exceed the lofty
standard set by the 2010 tribute to Michael Jackson at the event which was
attended by Jackson’s father Joseph Jackson before a capacity audience at the
Garfield Sobers Gymnasium.
“What we did for Michael Jackson, we did from our heart,
hence the quality and scale of the tribute. But you must understand that here we
will be paying tribute to two of Barbados’ outstanding musical exponents… home
drums must beat loudest, and to be totally honest with you, we are pouring our
hearts, minds and souls into these tributes, and I am confident that with God’s
blessing, they will be simply phenomenal”.
Performers for the tribute to Mike Wilkinson include Richard
Stoute, Ricky Stoute, Colleen Brewster and Shirley Stewart (of Walk Away From
Love fame, currently based in the USA). The Jermaine Forrester tribute will
feature a re-united 4 De People for the first time in close to a decade, to
feature Toni Norville, Philip Forrester, Shane Forrester, Danny Reid and
Jermaine’s cousin, Capitol recording star Jaicko.
“Auditions will begin soon for a cast of 12 dancers for the
tributes, and we would appreciate it if members of the public can email us
photos of Jermaine and Wilkinson to timelessbb@yahoo.com as we are preparing the
audio-visual aspects of the tribute as we speak.
“My biggest regret is that Jermaine had to leave Barbados in
search of opportunities in the USA, as so many great Barbadian entertainers have
had to do. This underscores the need for us to invest significantly in our
domestic talent and for radio to play more local non-calypso music while the
artistes are still alive. It’s a pity that an entire generation of Barbadian
youth have never seen Jermaine, Ricky Stoute, Sheryl Hackett, Shirley Stewart,
Lou Jiggs Kirton etc live on stage in Barbados, and are raving about the likes
of Trey Songz, Chris Brown and Ne-Yo who are very talented, but to be honest,
they don’t have a thing on Jermaine Forrester!
“I’m sure we will be hearing Jermaine’s music all over the
radio now that he’s gone, but it should have been in heavy rotation while he was
alive too!” Morris said, while appealing to the stakeholders to urgently
re-release Jermaine’s solo debut album to give Barbadians the opportunity to
have the late R&B artiste’s music in their collection.
Introducing, the logo for the 2011 Caridfest Awards.
The pyramid depicts what awesome results can be achieved when we as
people work together for one common goal. And we, as Caribbean people,
have accomplished tremendous things in the global music industry.
Big News from the Timeless, the Barbados Music Awards will be going
regional! From next year the Barbados Music Awards will be no more but
will be replaced by the “Caribfest Awards” a brand new initiative from
the Ronnie Morris/Russell Ruck Timeless team.
The Caribfest Awards will be seeking participation from artistes in
Antigua, Bermuda, Guyana, Haiti, Trinidad, Cuba, U.S territories Puerto
Rico, and U.S Virgin islands etc, all the territories in the region.
Ronnie said that funding had becoming problematic as it related to
the Barbados Music Awards but there was more potential sources for
funding an awards competition which encompassed the Caribbean.
It was stated persons in the different islands had been very receptive
to “Caribfest” and after its start up respective governments will be
approached for their support.
Here is how the nomination process will work for “Caribfest”; there
would be a committee of 20 persons that would be selected from the
islands along with 5 international judges, the committee would then
nominate artistes from all the areas. The eventual winners would be
decided by the voting public from throughout the region.
In response to persons including myself, who expressed concern over
the demise of the Barbados Music Awards especially after the excellent
show which was staged on Sunday, Ronnie stated, if enough funding was
made available to Timeless, they might still do the Barbados Awards
event but it all depends on the support they get.
Ronnie wrapped up by saying local artistes now having to compete with
regional counterparts for awards would now raise the bar as it relates
to entertainment standards.

International Lifetime Achievement Award (In Memoriam) Michael Jackson
International icons, producers,
promoters, managers, dancers, singers and some local
stars all gathered at the Barbados Hilton Resort for what turned out to be a
very successful showcase and workshop, hosted by Timeless Entertainment,
producers of the Barbados Music Awards.
One of the biggest, in my opinion, if
not the biggest name in the music industry worldwide, Mr. Joe Jackson, father of
the late Michael Jackson, was in attendance as well as Fantasia Barinno and her
management team. Mr. Jackson was very impressed by the natural talent of many of
our youngsters, and left them all with honest, kind words of encouragement.
The panel, a good mix of very
influential people in the business included legal and marking executives, Johnny
Taylor Jr. and Dwayne Moseley, manager Brain Dickens, promoter/producer Rick
Clarke (UK), entertainment reporter, Darius Brown of ABC News, Mr. Jackson and
the lovely Fantasia Barinno. No disrespect to any names omitted, it was an
impressive panel.
Showcasing their stuff were some well
known names like Cherish Breedy, Sir Ruel, Charles Reece (dancer), the local
rap/hiphop fraternity was well represented and received encouraging reviews from
the panel. Their were a few impromptu show pieces by the talented Nakita
Browne, the sultry Ria Borman, Dwayne Husbands, Toni Norville, Hotta Flames and
Ronnie Morris, casually reminding us all why he is so passionate about the music
industry in Barbados, because folks Ronnie can still sing, and has the talent to
be signed with any big music label!
I must mention, Ria’s performance,
spectacular to say the least! She left the panel speechless, no lie. Fantasia too was blown away, she was so impressed by what
she heard, she hinted at maybe asking Ria to join her on stage during her
concert performance, Ria totally stunned by the request, agreed without
hesitation.
The afternoon session was dedicated to
Q&A. The panel graciously shared some very useful and realistic advice about
the music industry.Although at times the group gathered
was a bit taken back at what was said, but it was the truth, with no sugar coating.
Honest advice from personal experiences. The topics discussed ranged from
signing contracts, what it is, what goes in it, what to fight for, to how to keep your personal style etc.
We were
all reminded that the music industry is a business, investors want and expect
good returns on their investment, they expect you to be professional and hold up
your end of the deal just as much as you expect them to help you pay your bills. All said and done, artist were advised to always have a lawyer look over
all contracts, never sign in the heat of the moment, find a team and surround
themselves with people who are 100% looking out for their best interest.
A question that seemed to almost have
the panel stumped was why is it so difficult for soca/calyso music to break
through into the main stream music industry? A fair question I thought, since
Barbados is the Calypso capital of the world! However, through careful thought
and word placement, the panel was able to somewhat satisfy those present with a
simple, explanation, which sounded almost like a challenge or prospective
business pitch. In short, soca music will not break through on the main stream
pop charts, simply because it is not pop…….dahhh! However, elements of the
genre, as well as reggae will always be heard creeping into newer musical
artistic fusions. The challenge…..well we all know the name Russell Simmons.
Well, in fact rap/hip-hop music ‘way back in the day’ was faced with the same
limitations and reservations that our music, our soca and calypso is faced with
today, and Mr Simmons took it upon himself to make a difference, he was no
longer going to sit back and wait for someone else to develop his music and
music of his friends, he did it himself. He was the one
or one of the ones, to successfully make the world stop and respect rap/hiphop
for what it is.So after, you guys are through google-ling
his bio, who is going to step up and make the world listen to us, to our music?
I’ll be waiting to hear………….
The 2009 edition of the Barbados Music Awards came off without a hitch on Sunday night, January 4th. As expected Timeless Entertainment produced a very well attended event. The only noticeable inconvenience was the crowded and very warm reception area, with the red carpet entry running through it! Many local artiste, radio and television personalities as well as the socialites came out for a chance to witness the magnificent performance by singing sensation Regina Belle, but of course, the highlight for the evening and the real purpose of the event was to salute our very own stars. Stabby the Guard won one the more coveted awards of the evening, Artist of the Year, a huge accomplishment for such a new entertainer. Khiomal took home Male Entertainer of Year. most fitting for this very energetic performer. Anderson "Blood" Armstrong, the biggest winner of the night, took away four awards, Album of the Year, Soca/Calypso Album of the Year, Best Soca Up-Tempo Single and Best Collaboration with Tara.
Internationally acclaimed and Grammy award-winning singer Regina Belle will be
appearing at the Barbados Music Awards (BMAs) at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford
Centre at 7 p.m today Sunday January 4th 2009. She will be among the special
awardees and will receive the International Achievement Award.
A
reunited Square One band will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. "It is our
intention to take the event to a higher level this year," said Ronnie Morris,
founder and director of the BMAs.
Belle
attended a workshop sponsored by Timeless Barbados Inc, organisers of the
Barbados Music Awards held at Olympus VIP yesterday.
"NOTHING LIKE IT has ever happened in Barbados before."
Ronnie Morris from Timeless Barbados Inc. was all hyped up yesterday evening in preparation for Sunday's Barbados Music Awards (BMA) extravaganza.
The show is touted as the crème de la crème of all musical
spectacles, and the director said he was elated as preparations
"exceeded all expectations".
An all-day workshop comes off today where major representatives in
the North American music scene will be interlocutors on various topics
in the music industry, including publishing, recording and producing.
While Morris hesitated to say whether tickets for tomorrow night's event at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex
were sold out, he did emphasise they were "selling very well",
indicating it was one of the best responses he had seen to sales since
the awards gala was first staged in 2006.
International artistes expected to perform on the bill are Regina Bella, Nhojj, Casely and Che'nelle.
