Who is a Bajan
A Barbadian:- born in Barbados born to Barbadian parents a naturalized citizen
A Bajan:- buys fish in the market naturally malicious (nosey) walk in the road, not on the sidewalk car repaired at a roadside garage get hair cuts under a tree don?t buy coconuts
In essence, a bajan is not just a person who was born is Barbados, or born to persons from the island of Barbados. Being bajan is all about lifestyle, manner and the way we speak.
Bajans by nature, are a very malicious people. We make it a point to know everything about everybody, good or bad, and then have an opinion it. Barbadians on the other hand, prefer to stay out of ?he say, she say? chat and generally mind their own business.
If you consider yourself to be a bajan, you never buy fish in the supermarket. That is a definite no-no. Everybody knows that real bajans only buy fish in the market, the Barbadians go the supermarket.
Bajans generally do what they want. They dress as they want and don?t really follow trends, they eat and drink what they want, when ever they want, your mother is always shown respect, you need lime with your friends, blame the govment (Government) for everything, tolerate an unreliable bus service and get work late every day.
Anytime a person is referred to a bajan, it is received with great pride. For being called such is a seen as a seal of approval by the people, that you have exhibited through lifestyle, company you keep (not usually with those above your social status) and manner that you are ?one o? we?. |
