......about Good Friday

It is believed that it will rain on Good Friday, this rain is known to be holy rain.

 

There is a tree (physic nut) that is said to ?bleed? if bruised at exactly 12 noon on

Good Friday. This is supposed to be the tree from which the cross was made.

???..about pregnancy

An expectant mother should not sit with her legs crossed; the baby will mimic this

position and case problems at delivery.

 

A pregnant woman should not go into a cemetery; the child will be born with a disability.

 

If a pregnant woman craves something and does not get it, the baby is born with a

mark in the shape of the thing she craved.

 

An expectant mother should be careful not to punch the eyes out of a fish, the child will be

born blind.

Small children should not be lifted by one arm, it believed that this will cause an ear infection (running ear).

 

Children should not be lifted through windows; they will grow up to be thieves.

 

Babies should not be tickled before they learn to talk; this will cause the child to stammer.

 

Also if a baby boy gets a hair cut before he learns to speak, it will delay his talking.

 

Babies should be allowed to cry at times, this will develop their vocal abilities.

 

A child?s stunted or delayed growth, is said to be cause by being stepped over repeatedly.

 

It is believed that first born children are stupid.

 

When a child loses a tooth, it must be thrown on the roof to ensure a new one grows.

 

To keep bad spirits away from a sleeping infant, place an opened prayer book or bible near

its head.

 

It is good luck for a boy to take-after (look like) his mother, and a girl to take-after her father.

??.........about birds

If bird droppings lands on a person, it I said to be sign of good luck.

 

If a cock crows before midnight, it is a warning that death is coming to the house to which

he belongs.

 

If a cock crows with his head pointing towards the house, a visitor is coming, if his head is

pointed away from the house, then it is believed that someone will die.

 

If a group of hens are cackling at same time, it is also believe that someone in the

household or living nearby will soon die.

 

If a wood-dove lands on the roof and starts to coo, it means that some in the house will

soon die. 

 

When he coos at night, someone in the community is near death.

??..about the walking stick (god-horse)

If present around the noise, it is believed that death is coming to someone in the household.

 

Some also believe that these insects will crawl into one ears, though there has never

been an actual case of this happening.  It is more likely for ants or other small crawling

insects to become lodged in one?s ear.

?....?about the cricket (the insect, not the game)

A small noisy insect, when present in the house, it is believed that good fortune (money)

is coming to the house.  It is important not to kill or get rid of the noisy insect, no matter

how much noise it makes.

?...?.about the grasshopper

A brown grasshopper is a sign of good luck, however a green grasshopper is said to

bring bad luck and must not be allowed in the house.

??....about the ladybird

It is believed that new clothes will come to anyone if a ladybird lands on their clothing.

???..about weddings

Young ladies should not wear rings on the ?ring? finger, this is believed to blight their

chances of getting married. They should also take care not to get their feet swept over

by a broom, this will also blight them.

 

A bride to be should never make her own bridal gown, never mind how crafty she is at dressmaking.

 

The bride groom should never see the bride to be in her gown before the ceremony, this will bring bad luck to the marriage.

 

Weddings should never be held on Fridays, this is not a lucky day.

 

Black should be worn at weddings, this colour is said to be a mourning colour and signifies sadness. 

 

Only the bride is supposed to wear white at a wedding ceremony.

???about the fly

The money fly, larger than the ordinary house fly, is said to be a sign that money is

coming.  Though you should kill the house fly, the money fly should be coaxed out of

the house (shooed away).

???about the green lizard

The third largest know in Barbados, if present in the house, means that someone in

the household or close relative is pregnant.

??....about dogs

It is believed that dogs can see spirits (duppies) and will howl (not bark) at the sight of one.

????.about the body

Sitting on a hot or wet surface, will cause stomach ache.

 

After removing your shoes, you should let your feet ?cool-off? before walking on wet or damp

 ground; or this may cause belly hurt.

 

When a person sneezes, it is believed that someone somewhere has spoken their name.

 

Young women must not let everybody put their hands in their hair; this will cause the hair to fall out.

 

If a young girl urinates in a ?topsy? depending on how the urine hits the bowl, you can tell whether or not she is still a virgin.

 

If a woman menstruates more than once in a cycle, it is said that she has been unfaithful to her partner.

 

An itchy palm means that you will soon receive money.

 

If your face becomes covered in cobweb, someone in the house is going to die.

????about the home

If you sweep the house at night, you will make the house poor, because all the so-called

riches will be swept out. You must sweep the dust in a corner until the next day.

 

Breaking a mirror will bring bad luck to the household.

 

Walking under a ladder will bring bad luck.

 

If salt is spilt, you should wet it to avoid bad luck.

 

Sprinkle water in the corners of a new house, to avoid bad luck.
