Biography
Trevor “Trezay” Goring wants to take hip hop to the world – Barbadian style. And judging from his achievements to date he’s not far from that goal. But that journey could not have begun without the influence from the home of Hip Hop itself: the streets of New York. Growing up in Brooklyn Trezay had an active childhood and was involved in several sporting activities. But he showed his greatest talent in skateboarding. In fact his talent was recognized by the corporate community and he landed sponsorship for his riding. As easily as he slid his board along mini ramps and streets, his rhymes glided easily onto his paper. He wrote and performed his first rap song at 13, winning the competition convincingly. He hasn’t stop rhyming since. After moving back to Barbados he met and befriended a producer called Big Shawn – also a lover of the break dancing, hip hop culture – and the bond continues to this day. Trezay reminisces about the early days when the big hip hop fans in Barbados numbered fewer than 100, yet they continued to perform and support each other: ‘"We had like 50 Hip Hop heads on the island so we didn't have a reason to make albums”. Despite this lack of popularity for the artform Trezay stuck to what he was passionate about and released the debut album BigS&T-Finally, which sold more than two thousand CDs becoming one of the most successful Barbadian hip hop albums to date. A testament to the artform’s growing popularity, even in the face of proliferation of calypso and reggae. He also executive produced and released his own Soca infused hip hop album entitled ChipHop, which featured a unique fusion of Caribbean rhythms and hip hop beats.
Despite the dominance of Soca, reggae and R&B in the Barbadian market, Trezay’s perseverance has paid off. His tracks have been ranked number 1 on a few of the online charts. Always striving for the next level of recognition and respectability for his craft, Trezay has also established the production company LiquidCidyProductions. Trezay's second studio album, Liquid Flow, is set for a fall 2008 release under the So Real Entertainment label & features collaborations with a list of producers from California, London, New York and the Caribbean as well as long time friend BigShawn. Poundas received the cornerstone award at the inaugural Barbados Music Awards 2006 for their contribution to the local hip hop industry.
With the industry gathering momentum this family man at heart has his sights set on being executive producer of his own work. After the collective struggle of the local hip hop community for airplay, local and regional fans have fallen instep with Trezay and the pace of his development as an artiste. With the Barbadian music scene properly stirred up and given more of the hip hop flavor, Trezay is ready to take his brand of the artform around the world. But this father of one keeps it all in perspective: "I'm just fortunate that people happen to like what I do.”
