Biography

j-co

Rapper/singer J-Co is making serious waves in his home country of Barbados and beyond. The fourteen-year old, who has been honing his skills for the past 4 years has made a name for himself with his latest releases Pon Fire and Life is Hard, which have been literally burning up the Barbadian airwaves. Pon Fire, a genuine dance/club joint is a heavy-hitting R&B/hip-hop hybrid, coupling conventional hip-hop beats with a touch of Caribbean flavor. Life is Hard as the name suggests is an honest commentary on the difficulties of life in todays world. It however is not a negative woe-is-me item. While outlining issues of poverty, natural disaster and other serious social issues, the overall vibe is one which encourages listeners to remain positive and be strong. The variety in the two tracks demonstrates J-Cos versatility and potential longevity as an artist. Both tracks are also unique in the sense that J-Co infuses Bajan (the creole word for Barbadian) dialect throughout his tracks, immediately instilling his own style into the genre, and giving enough Caribbean spice to make audiences take a second listen. Pon is a Barbadian nuance of the word on and was used in Rihannas hit Pon De Replay which hit number 2 on the Billboard Charts. Pon Fire builds on the now internationally recognized Bajan slang. Life is Hard features an infectious hook by Hal Linton, another Bajan artist. The hook, wunna know life is hard features another Bajan slang, wunna which means everyone or all of you. While both songs are strong hip-hop numbers, J-Cos Caribbean infusions add a definite edge to his music. J-Co has linked with some heavy-hitters in the music biz. The beat for Pon Fire was produced by J.R. Rotem who has worked with Lil Kim, Snoop Dogg, Fabolous, Foxxy Brown and Busta Rhymes. He also worked on Rihannas SOS, which made the second largest jump to the number one position in Billboard history. J-Co has also worked with Marley Marl on a cover of Round The Way Girl, and with Lenky Marsden of Divali riddim fame on Simply Beautiful, a track yet to be released. He also worked with producer Marley Marl, who has worked with the likes of LL Cool J, Big Daddy Kane and MC Shan. Locally, J-Co has earned the respect of the industry. Producers, fellow-artistes and the general public have tagged him as a future star, following other successful Bajans such as Rupee, Alison Hinds and Rihanna. Hes been identified by CiRCUIT magazine, Barbados leading youth publication in its the Nexx feature, as an artiste likely to break onto the international scene. J-Co continues to work with local and international producers to refine his sound. At least one international label has expressed interest in working with him
